Gta 5 Slow Download Fix

Download game for pc full. Why does it take so much time to get GTA 5 installed on a PC? Update Cancel. A d b y P i l o t. Put your bookkeeping on autopilot. Because it has 7 DVDs and the copy speed of DVDs is VERY slow, the game is 60GB (Huge world, mission files etc), and it also depends on the speed of your processor and also the size of RAM and its speed. For those of you who picked up Grand Theft Auto 5 for PC on launch day, you should hopefully have managed to log a few man-hours by now to get a good feel for the game and it's pretty incredible looking graphics.

[GTA 5][PC] Slow RSC auto-updater speeds? Here's how to fix it.

I bought GTA 5 the other day outside of Steam. The download speed I got on the auto-updater was horrible, and it would frequently drop out. I couldn't even leave it going overnight because the auto-updater would frequently say that the service was unavailable and force me to click 'Retry' to continue. Disabling the Web Shield component in my antivirus (Avast) helped a little, but not much.

It turns out, though, that this isn't the fault of the auto-updater itself, but by a bad configuration on Rockstar's part, which causes the auto-updater to use 10 simultaneous connections to the same server! This kills your download speed and causes exactly the sort of problems I was seeing.

Fortunately, it's fairly easy to work around. Here's how to do it.

  1. First, download the official configuration from http://patches.rockstargames.com/prod/gtav/launcher_online_config.xml and save it somewhere. This is the configuration file that the GTA V launcher retrieves when it starts up.

  2. Edit the configuration file using Notepad++ or your favourite text editor that isn't Notepad. (Notepad doesn't show the newlines properly.) Look for a line reading:

Edit it to have a value of 3 instead of 10, and save the file.

3. Next, download Fiddler. This is a proxy that allows you to intercept HTTP requests made by some programs - specifically, those that use WinINet to interact with the Internet. Fortunately, the GTA V launcher is one of these programs. (Sorry for the link shortener there - Reddit doesn't like URLs with parentheses in.)

4. We're going to use the 'AutoResponder' mode of Fiddler to get it to return our edited XML file instead of the file from the Internet. Launch Fiddler, and on the right hand side you should see 7 different tabs: Log, Filters, Timeline, Statistics, Inspectors, AutoResponder, and Composer. Click on the 'AutoResponder' tab.

5. Click on 'Enable rules', then 'Add Rule'. A new row will appear in the list box and the Rule Editor at the bottom will become active. For the first text box in the Rule Editor, where it says StringToMatch[1], you should put:

For the second box, where it says 'Local file to return or *Action to execute', click the drop-down arrow on the right and select the bottom option, 'Find a file..'. Navigate to where your edited 'launcher_online_config.xml' file is, and double-click it.

6. Make sure you tick the 'Unmatched requests passthrough' box on the AutoResponder tab. Sorry, I forgot to include this in the initial set of instructions! Without doing this, Fiddler will only answer to the config file and nothing else. Obviously, that isn't what we want!

7. We don't want or need Fiddler to intercept our HTTPS requests, so go to the 'Tools' menu and click 'Fiddler Options..'. On the 'HTTPS' tab, untick the 'Capture HTTPS CONNECTs' box, and click OK.

8. One last thing you need to do is to enable the Stream mode of Fiddler. Do this by clicking on the 'Stream' button on the toolbar, between the 'Go' and 'Decode' buttons. (Technical explanation: By default, Fiddler operates on a 'store-and-forward' mechanism where it downloads the entire file first and then applies whatever filters you've defined. For updates like these, where the files can be several gigabytes large, that's not feasible, so we tell Fiddler to stream instead. Fortunately, we don't need any filters.)

9. Now, while Fiddler is still open, launch GTA V and sign in. You should start seeing the left side of Fiddler filling up with requests, and your download speed in the launcher should be much improved and your connections should be much more stable. You may still need to disable any Web Shield (for example) component in your antivirus for the full download speed, but even with your antivirus fully enabled things should be a lot more stable.

10. Fiddler only takes effect when it's running, so you can close it after your update is done and everything will be back to normal. The next time you need an update, simply run Fiddler again before running the updater and it should remember your settings.

I hope this guide helps people as much as finding this out helped me! I was tearing my hair out before I realised this was possible.

[edit: I forgot to mention that you should tick 'Unmatched requests passthrough'! This is very important. It's on the AutoResponder tab.]
